Hi Dick, Just wanted to tell you there is an upcoming event at the Griffith Observatory that I have a vested interest in.
Lily Koppel has written an book entitled The Astronaut Wives Club, of which I was a “member.” Actually it
wasn’t a club at all, rather a group of women, mostly military wives, whose husbands were in the first three groups of astronauts. These men flew the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions.
My husband Charlie Bassett was in the third group but unfortunately was killed shortly before his Gemini 9 flight.
Gene Cernan was Charlie’s back up and went on to several flights, including the last man on the Moon mission.
Lily has spent years interviewing these women, not all of whom are included in the book at their own request. Imagine interviewing more than 30 women, all of whom are at least 72, transcribing these interviews then sewing them into an accurate, readable tome.
Lily will be speaking at the Griffith Observatory, and signing books, on June 24, 2013. Check the FOTO events slot on the Griffith Observatory page. If anyone attends be sure to speak to her and tell her we went to NHHS together.
Cheers to all, sorry to miss the reunion but hope it is a huge hit!

Hi all, I regret that I will not be able to attend the reunion brunch on June 29. I was really looking forward to see some good, ol’ Huskies again. However, that date is sandwiched between a couple of appointments that I can’t change, and really don’t want to delay. When they were set up I had no clue of the reunion. What a sad tale!
I do have one thing to share that might be interesting to some, Lily Koppel has written a book entitled The Astronaut Wives Club. It will be on shelves shortly before the reunion. She focuses on the wives of the first three groups of astronauts who were pioneers in space. My husband, Charlie Bassett was selected in the third group while we were at Edwards AFB in 1964. In fact, my PJ sisters had a luncheon for me at Sportsmens, complete with a cake decorated with a rocket. He was in training for his flight on Gemini 9 when he was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1966. Lily did hours of interviews with these women. From my point of view she has told the story with accuracy and much appreciated sensitivity.
Have a wonderful time, give my regards to all, and I’ll be thinking about great days at NHHS while y’all are brunching.
Maybe we’ll do a 65th reunion???
Keep in touch.
